What are the channel rules?
No warez, porn or serials. No excessive idling. No colour codes and no bold / underline codes except for nick highlighters. No excessive repeating. No swearing. Be civil to the other members of the channel, no insulting for a lack of knowledge. No OS debates. No debating the rules with the ops.
Do you all work for Microsoft?
No. The channel operators are all computer enthusiasts, whom volunteer to assist people with their problems. We help at our discretion, and try to get to everyone's questions if we know the answer and have the time to solve them.
Can I be op? Huh, Huh? Can I?
Channel operators are added from time to time, so yes, it's certainly possible you could be an op. Ops are always on the lookout for helpful and knowledgeable people. Typically these "helpers" will be voiced in the channel for some time. This gives the ops chance to get to know, and evaluate potential candidates. Once nominated, a candidate must be voted in. Getting enough ops to vote for you is no small achievement, and certainly won't happen today.
I need help, but I'm not getting any answers in the channel! What should I do?
There are a few things you can try. Many times, as simple as this seems, people do not read the manual or documentation from which the origin of the problem supplied. If the answer isn't found there, try sorting through the Links section of this website to see if any of those pages can help you. Finally, you can go to our Forums and posting your question under the appropriate forum. Please be clear and supply as much detail as you can, but at the same time, try to keep it short!
What does HashVC mean?
We needed a cool short name for our website. "The IRC DALnet #Windows95 Web Site" was a bit too long. Take the '#' and '95' from #Windows95 and you get a 'Hash' and the roman numeric 'VC'. Even though the proper roman numeric for 95 is XCV, it just didn't sound as cool. And no, HashVC is not a new drug, or some randomly produced jibberish!
What is WinBot?
WinBot is the channel management bot, coded by JoeyQ. Its central purpose is to be a step ahead of the operators in standard maintenance and to keep the channel a peaceful envorinment to speak in. This code is not to be confused with the code also called WinBot by Brain
, which was actually created after JoeyQ's WinBot was born.
Is Chesperito really WinBot?
Not exactly. Chesperito is the channel information bot, coded by Chivo. However it does contain the core channel management core of WinBot v2 and is performing Winbots duties for the time being. Chesperito also contains numerous informational subroutines, as well as Artificial Intelligence. Chesperito will tell you that it is "a distributed application running over a private LAN using IIS
, ASP
, Apache
, Access
, MySQL
, VBScript
, Com Components
, Visual Basic
, AIML
, Java
and mIRCScript
. I am still incomplete, buggy and prone to reciting mis-information."
M$ sucks. L!nuX RulEZ. ][ am eLiTe. Is that okay?
We do not bother with immaturity in our channel, forums, or elsewhere on our site. If you cannot agree with this, please go elsewhere!
What happened to the blog?
The DALnet #Windows95 Blog has been discontinued. Although an ambitious project to supply news, reviews, and information to the general public, it was defeated by the lack of time from the reviewers to create continuous content, and from a flood of similar sites that had sprung up all around the net.
What is a wiki?
As Wikipedia
states, "the wiki is a vast simplification of the process of creating HTML pages, and thus is a very effective way to exchange information through collaborative effort." When searching for an alternative to the failed HashVC blog, an experimental wiki portion of the new site was considered. It quickly became apparent that the power of a wiki would be best used to house the entire future website, now called HashVC: The DALnet #Windows95 Wiki.
